How A Blower Motor Works

A blower motor creates a vacuum by pushing air. As the blades turn, they force air across the opening in the front of the motor, creating a lower pressure on one side of the blades than on the other. The difference in pressures pushes air out the back of the blower, creating a vacuum on one side of the blades.

Blowers: The Solution to Your Heating Needs

Square One carries different types of blowers tailored for optimal performance.

Draft Inducer

A draft inducer is a type of fan used in gas furnaces and appliances to provide increased airflow for improved efficiency in gas combustion. It converts pressure from the outside air and diverts it for use in indoor devices.

An inducer motor creates a vacuum in the furnace that pulls air in through the burners. An important safety component, it ensures that sufficient air is present in the room before ignition.

Draft inducers come in two types: centrifugal, where the flow moves from outside to inside and vice versa; and axial, which channels force in one direction.

Square One sells and services Draft Inducers that are suitable for industry, commercial, and home use, with a range of different models to suit all your needs.Furnace or Fireplace Blower

Our FLUE EXHAUST CROSS REFERENCE CATALOG can help you find an affordable replacement for your OEM blower unit.

Used in industry and homes, this blower keeps your fireplace or furnace burning and warm by creating direct or indirect airflow. A direct fireplace fan works by blowing air directly against the fire, while an indirect blower pulls air through the fireplace and out of the chimney.

Centrifugal Blower

A centrifugal blower operates by compressing the gas (or vapor) stream with an axial compressor and then passing it through a combustion chamber where it is ignited. The hot gases expand rapidly and are forced out at high velocity through an outlet nozzle, which in turn is accelerated by radial vanes.

Blower Motor

A cooler or heater blower motor is often used to circulate air through heating and cooling devices - like furnaces, fireplaces, and HVAC units. These motors distribute conditioned air throughout a property.

Fireplace Blower Troubleshooting

Having issues with your furnace? Before deciding on a replacement, which can be costly, check if the trouble is minimal and can be fixed on your own or with minimal professional intervention.

Issue: The furnace blower motor hums but does not turn on.

Indicator: A buzz-like sound with no air flowing through the gates is most of the time due to a faulty capacitor.

Action: You can go through the DIY trouble of fixing the capacitor or pick the easier path of calling a company that fixes furnaces, like Square One.

Issue: The motor runs, but the fireplace or furnace does not work.

Indicator: A normal cranking-up sound of the motor is heard, but no heat emanates from the apparatus.

Action: Your fireplace blower might need to be replaced. For a more accurate diagnosis, call us, and we’ll conduct an onsite checkup.

Issue: The motor runs all the time.

Indicator: Your furnace heats up even if the temperature is warm.

Action: Look at the fan switch on the thermostat and ensure it’s set to “auto” instead of “on.” In that case, it’s possible that the control board needs replacing. But, if the thermostat controls the motor, you might need to purchase a new one.

Issue: The furnace or fireplace is making loud noises.

Indicator: A clanging sound or even a funny smell emanating from the application.

Action: You might need to replace the bearings in your motor or just replace the unit completely. But problems with noise or smell calls for a new filter.

Furnace Motor Maintenance

Avoid replacing your whole blower motor when you could perform simple steps to extend its lifespan as long as possible. Occasional maintenance will facilitate an efficiently running motor and would be worth the effort in the long run.

Below is a guide you can use to conduct your own fireplace or furnace motor maintenance.

  1. Flip the electrical power switch off and turn off the gas.
  2. Take off the combustion chamber door.
  3. Using a vacuum hose, remove the dust that you’re able to reach. Lift the blower door and vacuum the blower compartment.
  4. Change the furnace filter every one to three months.
  5. Check the belt for any necessary adjustment, cracks, or general areas of damage that may require repairs or replacement.
  6. If your motor and/or blower is equipped with shaft bearings, lubricate those annually. Just remove the caps and apply a few drops of light machine oil.

Oil Furnace Motors

Oil burning furnaces and heaters utilize an electric furnace motor to power the fan and pump inside.

The pump pulls oil from the tank into a tube, prompting the oil to spray as a fine mist that is ignited into a flame. Then, the fan pulls air into the burner. Once mixed with the oil spray, it helps fuel the fire in the combustion chamber.

Prolong the motor’s lifetime with an annual furnace maintenance program.

Dust and Dirt Cleanup

When dust and dirt build up on the blower wheel or squirrel cage, it may cause imbalance or noise. You can clean the squirrel cage blades with a vacuum and a small brush. Do this carefully and make sure not to bend the blades or disturb the weights.

Lubrication

Some oil burner motors are totally enclosed, while others require regular oiling. To lubricate, remove the oil caps and apply two to three drops of lightweight oil.

Important: Do not over-lubricate. Check your equipment’s user manual for the appropriate amount to use.

Tips for Motor Replacement

Despite all your efforts, or if the motor of your device has reached its maturity, be prepared to purchase a new one.

Here’s how to guarantee the best match for your machine:

  • Ensure that the replacement’s RPM, frame, phase, and voltage exactly fit your motor. You may select a higher horsepower (HP) but never a lower one.
  • Choose the correct overload protection accordingly:
    • Manual Overload - requires a physical reset when restarting the motor
    • Automatic Overload - stops the motor when it is overheating or when overload occurs and then restarts it when cooled down
    • Thermostat - connects to the control circuit and is set within the windings
    • None - no protection for the motor
  • Configuration, whether clockwise or counterclockwise, is important when you’re trying to check the motor’s opposite shaft end. The rotation of most motors can be reversed by physical orientation or by an electrical connection.
