ATEX
ATEX is the phrase used to describe the set of European guidelines for equipment used in explosive atmospheres, or where dangerous vapours, gases, or combustible dusts (ie – wood or flour) are found. ATEX is based on the requirements of two European Directives:
1) Directive 99/92/EC (ATEX 137 – Workplace Directive) regarding minimum requirements for improving the health and safety protection of workers who are potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres;
2) Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95 – Equipment Directive) regarding the laws of Members States concerning equipment and systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
In essence, ATEX certification is the European equivalent to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in the United States.
